Doubts over war on terror as US pays tribute to victims of 9/11

Posted by alanmirs on September 13, 2006

NEW York began its remembrance of the events of 11 September, 2001,
last night with George Bush, the United States president, laying a
wreath to mark a tragedy with consequences far beyond the city’s own

The appearance of the president at the site of the World Trade
Centre’s twin towers was the central event of many acts of reflection
taking place in Manhattan and across the world. Mr Bush’s domestic
approval ratings soared and his presidency was reshaped after he
rallied America from the ruins of the WTC days after the al-Qaeda

But the unity forged amid the grief for the nearly 3,000 people killed
has long since given way to sharp divisions over the Iraq war, fighting
in Afghanistan and controversy over the Bush administration’s tactics
in the war on terror. The scale of the shift in attitudes was
illustrated by a Sky News poll out today that reveals only a minority
of British people believe the US and UK are winning the war on terror.
