Tehran’s long and winding road

By Kaveh L Afrasiabi

Greeting the Persian new year, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad looked
confidently at the route ahead, promising that the nation "more powerful than
ever will continue in the path of its high objectives". Looming sanctions and
other efforts to isolate the economy over Tehran’s nuclear program over the
coming months make it highly challenging to stay on track.

Foreign policy questions ring particularly loudly in Tehran. Multiple
unresolved issues include the ongoing nuclear standoff, tensions with the
United States and Israel, a downturn in Iran’s European relations, a hidden
cold war with Saudi Arabia, spill-over conflicts from neighboring nations and a
lack of progress in the "Look East" strategy
