David Cameron rebukes Liam Fox over ‘bigging up’ of Iran’s nuclear ambitions
A Cabinet rift over Iran has developed after Dr Liam Fox was accused of exaggerating the threat of Tehran developing a nuclear weapon.
David Cameron, the Prime Minister, and William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, are understood to be unhappy about the Defence Secretary’s hawkish statements on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
The government has been pushing ahead with the programme while claiming that no decision has been made on a successor to Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent. Work on a new weapon by scientists at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire has been under way since Tony Blair was re-elected last May, and is now said to be ahead of similar US research
